Student Counseling

The Counseling Department consists of five mental health professionals that provide confidential, thoughtful, and continuing consultation and referral for families and students. Counseling services also include organizing psycho-educational programs for students and parent education forums throughout the year.

Assessment and Referral
Counselors work with students, families, and faculty and staff to address social, emotional, and behavioral issues that arise within the community. We provide short-term counseling, mental health assessments, ongoing support, coaching, and referrals to community and mental health resources. Consultation and collaboration with teachers, administrators, school counseling staff, specialty school staff, families, and outside mental health professionals provide seamless service and support to students. Counselors are also members of the Student Support Team (SST), a multi-disciplinary team whose efforts focus on assisting and supporting students with specific challenges.

Parent Education
The Counseling Department develops, organizes, and facilitates psycho-educational programs for students, parents, and faculty based on the social and emotional needs of the community.

Confidentiality Policy
The information that a counselor receives from a student, teacher, or parent will remain confidential to the extent possible. However, if the counselor determines that there is a threat to a student's own personal safety or well-being, that a student may be at risk of hurting himself or herself or others, or if a student, teacher, or parent reports abuse or neglect of a student, the appropriate adults and/or agencies will be notified.

Wellness and Life
The Counselors develop a program and curriculum designed to address social, emotional, and behavioral facets of a student's life and presents these in a developmentally appropriate way.

Community of Concern
Flint Hill School is a proud member of the nationally acclaimed Community of ConcernĀ® that has provided a foundation which D.C.-area independent schools have used to develop a forum for education and meaningful dialogue among, students, parents, faculty, and administrators.

Each year the Upper School organizes a Community of ConcernĀ® forum to educate Flint Hill School parents and help build a partnership among students, parents, and the school to encourage our youth to be alcohol, tobacco, and other drug free.
