Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
At Flint Hill School, our continued success as a community is dependent upon how well we value, engage, include and utilize the rich diversity of our faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni. We are committed to facilitating the education and training necessary within our community to promote ongoing dialogue about issues of diversity and inclusion.
Proactively and consistently, we must challenge stereotypes, create awareness and cultivate empathy and compassion. In this way we can create both an inclusive environment in which each member feels comfortable and accepted and a respectful community in which differences and commonalities are appreciated and valued. And only by doing so can we equip our students with an understanding and appreciation of diversity that prepares them to be thoughtful and active world citizens.
Diversity encompasses the wide array of ethnic and racial backgrounds, family structures, socio-economic backgrounds, genders, ages, sexual orientations, countries of origin, native languages, traditions, religions, learning styles and special needs.
Inclusion refers to the deliberate decision to strive for, establish, and nurture a supportive, encouraging, and affirming environment that respects and promotes both similarity and difference through active participation – in thought, voice and deed – by every member of our school community.
Embracing and valuing the diversity of our community is vital to our mission and an essential element of our educational excellence. Each individual who aspires to be part of our school community must accept the responsibility to demonstrate civility and recognize and honor the dignity of others. Together, we must continually challenge ourselves and each other to pursue these goals in an atmosphere of mutual concern, goodwill, and respect.
