From our Dance Academy to the annual Arts Jam and Nutcracker production, Flint Hill’s dance program offers instruction and performance opportunities for students of all ages and competencies. Our youngest students begin with Movement. Using the Brain Compatible Dance Education curriculum as the foundation, students explore dance concepts such as place, pathway, speed, energy and focus through varied exercises and activities. In the Middle School, students are eligible to participate on two dance teams, which meet after school and perform during School events throughout the year. In Grades 7 and 8, students may also participate in athletic dance class during the winter season, which includes ballet, jazz and contemporary dance.
Upper School students have access to a broad range of programming that promotes an understanding of movement and choreographic principles. These processes and structures ultimately encourage students to use both traditional and experimental forms as they explore their own choreographic ideas. Dance classes encompass established bases in ballet, modern dance, jazz, postmodern and cultural dance forms, and culminates with a company performance at selected times each year. Upper School students may also join the Varsity or Junior Varsity Dance Teams, which participate in summer dance camp, compete in regional dance team competitions (solo and ensemble) and participate in Flint Hill dance performances.
A highlight of our program is the Upper School dance studio, which features a sprung floor with Marley and dedicated dressing room. All dance classes and private lessons at Flint Hill meet in the dance studio, which is also used by the Middle and Upper School dance teams to practice and warm-up before performances.
