Dear Lower School Families,
Happy new year! It was wonderful to welcome the students back, after the Winter Break, on Monday. They seemed really happy to return to school, and it was very pleasing to see how quickly they settled into their routines!
Before the break, it was lovely to welcome families to school for our Holiday Concerts. The great selection of songs and music really showcased our children’s beautiful voices! I would like to congratulate Alecia Cardell and Wanda Ocasio on the excellent job they did preparing our students for their performances.

Winter After-School Club Registration Open Until Midnight Tonight
We are excited to announce our after-school club offerings for winter 2019. For returning options, like chess and fencing, we will continue to offer advanced-level small groups for more experienced students. Be sure to take note of some new clubs offered, including Cooking Club, Sewing Club and Train Club. The winter clubs will begin the week of January 14 and will run on the dates specified, from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. Please click here if you would like to sign up.
The registration form has been re-opened as a courtesy and will remain open until midnight on Wednesday, January 9. Please email Megan Dhar if you have questions or concerns.
January Lower School Division Coffee
In the Lower School, we work hard to nurture our students’ natural curiosity and use it to maximize their learning through inquiry. During our Division Coffee on Wednesday, January 16, we will provide an overview of the ways in which we integrate inquiry into the curriculum. With a focus on the engineering design process, you will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on challenge to experience how your children problem solve and make connections to gain a deeper understanding of how the world works. Come and join our Department Chair for Science and Social Studies at 8:15 a.m., in the Multipurpose Room (Room 112), on the Lower and Middle School Campus. This coffee will not be offered as a webinar.
Join us for a day of basketball and an activity-filled, family-friendly dinner, before we make Husky History with a special announcement you won’t want to miss!

Dressing for Cold Weather and Preparing for Cancellations
Cold Weather Break and Recess Policy
In cold weather, a hat, gloves and a winter-weight coat are required attire to go outside. Barring a medical condition, all children will participate in outdoor recesses. If wind chill conditions cause temperatures to feel 20 degrees or less, students will remain inside for recess. Children who do not have the required outerwear will not be allowed to go outside. It would be appreciated if parents could ensure that their child/children have the appropriate clothing for break and recess.
As noted previously, Flint Hill’s Inclement Weather Policy provides details on how we make decisions and notify the community about delays and school closures. With the potential for storms and extended closures, we will assign work to maintain academic momentum and skill development. Our Snow Day Work Policy — which goes into effect on the second snow day of the season — establishes guidelines for teachers to keep the expectations appropriate.
Here is a resource: Ideas for Snowy Days at Home 2018/2019. We hope that parents find the list of activities, which are a combination of language arts, math, science, computer science, art, social studies, music, and Spanish skills helpful.
