A new year and a fresh start to the school year is among us. We are excited for another great year at Flint Hill and want to share our faculty and staff updates with you.

Class Placements for the 2021-2022 School Year

Specific class assignments will be available Thursday, August 12, at 9 a.m. We have a very thorough and thoughtful process for class placements for our students. Many factors are considered, including the child’s academic, emotional and social needs, the student’s learning style and the different teachers’ teaching styles. Every effort is made to ensure that each student is in a learning environment in which he or she can flourish.

To access your child’s class placement, log in to the Husky Hub, click “Children” and select your child’s name. From the “Progress” page, scroll down to view your child’s classes and teachers.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant to the Director and the Assistant Director of the Lower School Donna Holaday at 703.584.2360.

Lower School Parent-Teacher Virtual “Hopes and Dreams” Conferences

At the beginning of each school year, using the Responsive Classroom and Developmental Designs approaches, homeroom teachers and advisors build their classroom communities with intention and care, so that each child feels safe, respected, and that they belong. To gain a better understanding of each child and facilitate a strong partnership with parents for the school year ahead, homeroom teachers will host a 20-minute Virtual Hopes and Dreams Conference for parents on Monday, August 30, and Tuesday, August 31. These conferences give parents the opportunity to share their hopes, dreams, and goals for their child for the new year. Parents are also encouraged to share any other information that would be helpful for the teacher to know about their child.

Parents can sign up for the virtual conferences, using our online scheduling system, beginning Monday, August 16. If you have any questions or need help with the online scheduling system, please contact Donna Holaday or at 703.584.2360.

Medication Drop-Off

For students who will need to keep medication on campus during the school year, we will have a medication drop-off day on Thursday, August 26, 10-2 p.m. at the Upper School circle.

Families will pull into the circle, and a nurse will come to your car to collect the medication and the appropriate forms. As a reminder, all prescription medication must be accompanied by the physician's order on the Medication Authorization Form, which must be completed and signed by the prescribing physician.

All medication must have the pharmacy label on it. You can access the forms from your Magnus account /Husky Hub resource board under the Planning for the School Year tile. All over-the-counter medication must be accompanied by the Medication Authorization Form and must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. The medication must be in the original packaging and must be administered according to the package instructions, including the time and route to be administered.

If you are unable to come to the School on the medication drop-off day, please call to schedule an appointment with one of the nurses prior to the start of school.

For medication refills throughout the school year, you will need to call and schedule appointments on Wednesdays at the Upper School Campus.

Lower School New Parent Orientation

To help new parents, as we prepare for the school year, Assistant Director of the Lower School Megan Dhar and I will be hosting a virtual meeting on Thursday, August 31, at 9 a.m. Returning parents are also welcome to attend. The link to the Google Meet will be available in next week’s newsletter.

Dance Academy Interest Form

We are planning to resume our popular Dance Academy after-school classes for the 2021-22 school year.

The Flint Hill School Dance Academy offers a variety of after-school ballet classes to students in grades K-12. These classes range from beginner-level classes, which introduce students to the world of dance, to advanced classes that offer a rigorous supplement to our in-school dance curriculum. Students will develop technical skills, musicality, strength, and performance qualities that will aid in their ability to express themselves through movement, discover connections to the world around them, and work individually and with others toward a goal.

In order to create a class schedule that fits the needs of our families, please fill out this form by August 16. If you have multiple students interested in Dance Academy, please complete one form for each student. Please contact Director of Fine Arts James Venhaus with any questions.

Enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer! In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me, Assistant Lower School Director Megan Dhar or Assistant to the Director and the Assistant Director of the Lower School Donna Holaday at 703.584.2360.

MAKING THE LEARNING VISIBLE

In the Lower School, our teachers provide a learning environment where students are actively involved and encouraged to inquire, and the activities are interactive, hands-on and student-centered. Teachers also provide authentic learning opportunities that are relevant to the child’s life experiences. Choice is a great motivator for our students, and very frequently, the inquiry that ensues is based on the students’ interests and passions as a class. Teachers are also intentional about providing field trip opportunities that enhance the learning experience. I welcome you to review this section throughout the school year to learn more about the creative ways that the Lower School makes the learning visible.
