Making the Learning Visible
In the Lower School, our teachers provide a learning environment where students are actively involved and encouraged to inquire, and the activities are interactive, hands-on and student-centered. Teachers also provide authentic learning opportunities that are relevant to the child’s life experiences. Choice is a great motivator for our students, and very frequently, the inquiry that ensues is based on the students’ interests and passions as a class. Teachers are also intentional about providing field trip opportunities that enhance the learning experience.
Kindergarten has been exploring shapes in the world around them. Students went on a shape hunt in their classrooms and on the playground. They took pictures on their iPads to document their discoveries and share them with one another. Students also experimented with different materials to create shapes, including Magnatiles, clay, Geoboards, and pattern blocks. Both classes read City Shapes by Diana Murray. They looked closely at the shapes in the illustrations and shared their ideas about the shapes they would use to create their own artwork. Students began co-creating classroom murals using shapes. They brainstormed ideas to come up with themes for their murals. KA decided to create a garden, and KB chose to create their own city. They selected the items that would appear in their respective settings and what shapes they would use to create each item. Each mural is made entirely from cut paper shapes. The students demonstrated impressive attention to detail while designing the various elements in their murals. They thought carefully about each item they wanted to add beforehand and considered which shapes could be used to create the object. What shapes do you see?
The fourth grade enjoyed a morning in the woods last Friday. They conducted six tests of water quality: turbidity, phosphates, nitrates, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen in the stream that runs between our East and West Campuses. They also collected benthic macroinvertebrates from the stream and were delighted to find caddisfly larva, damselfly larva, dragonfly nymphs, crayfish, and several other species that confirmed good water quality in our local stream. Our online learners received water testing kits to conduct environmental research with their families.
Our sixth-grade students are almost finished reading the novel “Some Kind of Happiness,” and on Tuesday, the author, Claire Legrand, joined them for a conversation on Google Meet. During this conversation, Claire Legrand spoke on a variety of topics including her inspiration for “Some Kind of Happiness;” her joys, challenges, and strategies during the writing process; her experiences with personal conflicts, such as anxiety and depression; and the importance of resiliency, support, and feedback when doing something that you are passionate about. Claire Legrand was so gratified by the conversation and the caliber of our students' questions that she requested to come back for another 30-minute session after the students have finished the book.
Fourth grade memory boxes are a long-standing tradition at Flint Hill. Students pack school and personal mementos, a letter to their future selves to be read as they graduate from high school, and other items of significance to be packed away as a time capsule to be opened when they are graduating seniors. Twenty six of our seniors opened their boxes together during Senior Week, sharing photos, souvenirs, letters, and memories. They were joined by several of their teachers from the Lower School, from JK to sixth grade. Each of our seniors who have been at Flint Hill since fourth grade received a personalized, handmade card from our current fourth graders.

UPDATES AND REMINDERS FROM LAST WEEK
Student Virtual Trivia Night for Rising Grades 5-12 — Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m.
Students currently in grades 4 through 11 are invited to a Trivia Night! Similar to the recent parent event, this event will be hosted by Trivia Hub and will feature a live host. Students new to Flint Hill next year are also joining in on the fun. To help students make new connections, we will randomly create grade level teams that include both new and current students. Teams will huddle in breakout rooms as they discuss their answers, so the evening will be a combination of time with all participants and small group fun.
Sign Up here to participate. The registration deadline is Wednesday, May 12.
Transportation
Bus service to and from Flint Hill is an important logistical component for many of our families. We are working toward providing bus service for the 2021-22 school year for Middle and Upper School students only.
If you are interested in bus service for the 2021-22 school year, please complete the bus service interest form by Friday May 7. Information on cost, possible routes, stops and pick-up/drop-off times is included on the bus service interest form.
The final list of available bus routes will be determined by ridership demand and is subject to change.
