Message From Division Director
I was observing an English class last week, and the instructor started with a check-in activity with the students. Many of the students commented that they were relieved the semester was ending because they like the idea of a “fresh start” in the second semester. For many of them, it felt akin to how many adults treat New Year’s Day; a time to make resolutions and commitments to improvement. It was wonderful to see the students utilizing so much reflection as we embark on the next semester.
This is a great time for parents to sit down with their students and ask them about what they are going to change or improve for the second semester. For many students, that will elicit comments about building more consistent and productive study habits. When students come to meet with me about how to avoid procrastination or multi-tasking at home, we often talk more about the small adjustments that adolescents can make which yield positive outcomes. Whether it is keeping their phone in a different room while they study, using Pomodoro breaks, or finding a new reading annotation system, there are multiple ways for students to tweak and adjust their study habits. It is a great reminder that it isn’t just “what” we study that matters, but “how” we study. Encourage your student to meet with their advisor if they are looking for more ideas.
