Upper School Newsletter - August 31, 2022

Message From Division Director
We have completed our first day of classes after using Monday and Tuesday for orientation activities. Maybe your student went home with initial impressions of their classes, such as “this one is going to be so much work” or “I am worried about _____ class.” This is a great time to remind them that first impressions don’t always ring true. Frequently, students have told me that what they perceived of me on the first day of class differed immensely from how they thought of me on the last day of class.
For those students who went home feeling stressed from seeing all of their teachers on the first day, remind them how much support they will find at Flint Hill from their teachers and peers. And for those who went home feeling elated from seeing all of their teachers, remind them the school year is a marathon and not a sprint. Either way, the sled has started moving and the Huskies are off and running!

All-School Calendar Now Available
To get to the All-School Calendar, log in to Husky Hub and click on the Calendar icon in the top menu bar. Scroll down and on the bottom left you can toggle on and off to select which calendars you’d like to display. We strongly recommend displaying the All-School Calendar.
Watch this short video to learn how to feed the All-School Calendar into your personal calendar. Fast forward to the 1:20 mark for the calendar tip. Watch the full video if you’d like a general refresher on Husky Hub.
And remember, the School’s IT department isn’t just for students; it’s a parent resource too! Email helpdesk@flinthill.org to ask a question or set up a time for a private tutorial.
Back-to-School Night on September 8
We will hold our annual Back-to-School Night next week on Thursday evening. There will be programming for families that use the Learning Center starting at 6:15 p.m., but the general program begins at 7:05 p.m. in your student’s advisory. We will distribute personalized schedules for the evening in that advisory. More details can be found in this Back-to-School Guide.
Senior/Parent College Night — TONIGHT
Senior/Parent College Night is TONIGHT at 7:00 p.m. on the Lower School Campus. Senior parents/guardians will meet in Olson Theater, while the seniors will gather in the gym. The college counselors will review the application process and provide additional guidance and advice to senior families; the Senior Planner will be distributed. Each senior and at least one parent/guardian is expected to attend due to the importance of the topics covered. The program will last no more than one hour. August 31 is a "No Homework Night" for seniors.
Senior Portraits Now Available Online / Schedule Reshoot
Senior portraits are now online for viewing and ordering. Senior families should have received an email from Freed Photography with their student's private gallery information. If you are a senior who has not had your portrait taken or would like a reshoot, please plan to do that when they return for Makeup Photo Day on Friday, September 9. Questions? Contact Freed at support@freedphoto.com or 301.652.5452.

Calling All Concessions Volunteers!
In addition to the Igloo, there is also a concession stand located on The John M. Thomas Terrace called the Den. We are excited to open it back up for afternoon athletic games. Parent volunteers are needed to help sell concessions in both the Igloo and the Den during the day and after school. More opportunities will be added throughout the year for each athletic season. Please sign up for as many shifts as you'd like, and feel free to invite a friend to sign up with you too.
