56 T-Shirts

IMG_0546

I have been collecting Flint Hill t-shirts since my son in kindergarten. From husky pride, Homecoming, band trips, Latin conventions, color games, you name, we have it! I always dreamed that I would get a quilt made from these shirts that he would take and have for the rest of his life to remember these last 13 years. He knew this was my plan and would always laugh at me and say he didn’t want a quilt, I decided I was doing it anyway.

This week I began going through all of the shirts. I had them hidden so that no one would give them away to a younger cousin or that I would somehow mistake them for a donation. As I pulled each one out, I remembered the moment they represented. The first was a t-shirt we received when we enrolled at the school. There was a Homecoming 2010 when I first volunteered at the Hut, a band t-shirt from my son’s short-lived career as a trumpet player, one from his first Latin convention, and a class of 2022 t-shirt he received when he moved up to the Upper School, and from every event in between. In total, I folded and mailed 56 shirts, each with their own story and memory, off to the quilter, where they will become functional, comforting art.

It’s funny how these pieces of fabric still mean so much, even after all these years. When my son saw me pulling them all together, he was worried I was giving them away. Over the years, my cynical kid has grown into a sentimental young man. He is looking forward to taking his Flint Hill quilt and memories off to school with him.

I hope you all have a wonderful and well-deserved Spring Break. As I have mentioned before, we will return full speed ahead into three months of Husky happenings! Rest up, and I can’t wait to see you all in person!

Go Huskies!
