Now a Flint Hill alum, Matthew McClements ’18 was the first Flint Hill Upper School student I really got to know. I can’t remember exactly when, but about eight years ago, I met his father, Mike McClements P’18, ’26 on a volunteer committee. Fast forward to present day, I now consider all the McClements part of my family.
Matthew was always a true example of a Flint Hill Husky. Even as a freshman he was a good student, a great friend, a natural leader and an example of what is possible. For me, seeing Matthew made me love FH even more.
So many of my memories of Flint Hill have Matthew in them — going to football games to watch him play, seeing him greet prospective students at admission events, watching him at Arts Jam, getting to know his friends, and sitting with his grandfather at lacrosse games. He embodied what I wanted for my son once he reached the Upper School.
Since graduating from Flint Hill, Matthew has made me love our school even more. In college, he used office hours with his professors; worked hard at his schoolwork, all while keeping relationships with his friends; and was a great son to his parents. He made me realize the value of a Flint Hill education.
This past weekend, Matthew graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance with a minor in accounting, and I couldn’t be prouder! Proud, of course, of the education he received but even prouder of the man he has become. I know that Flint Hill played a part in his success.
All moments come full circle and, last Friday, I watched my son speak at his final Latin Department Celebration. I saw the younger families look at him, just like I had looked at Matthew. I am proud of all our Flint Hill kids and can’t wait to see what they all do!
