At Flint Hill, we embrace the use of technology in and out of the classroom as a tool to encourage intellectual curiosity, enhance creativity and promote opportunities for collaboration and in-depth analysis. From an early age, our students develop a level of technological fluency that helps them to function adeptly in the digital world. Flint Hill teachers are well versed in current studies and evidence related to the role of technology in education, and are intent on integrating technology as a way to augment and supplement – not replace – traditional teaching methods, close relationships and meaningful communication with students.
1:1 and 2:1 Device Programs
As an Apple Distinguished School, and one of the first independent schools in the nation to implement a 1:1 technology program, we provide every student with an iPad or MacBook Air—tools that become indispensable over the course of their Flint Hill experience. In the Middle School, student are given both MacBooks and iPads. Both campuses are equipped with additional resources to enhance the learning experience, from interactive whiteboards and Apple TVs to 3D printers and USB microscopes.
In the Lower School, technology is integrated seamlessly with courses ranging from language arts and science to mathematics and music. Lower School students use their iPads to explore engineering and architecture concepts for the annual Day of Play and participate in Skype sessions with notable authors. As early as Kindergarten, students use augmented reality games to practice geometry and spacial reasoning.
For Middle and Upper School students, technology fosters a dynamic, complex and challenging learning environment. Students create animated profiles of visual artists, learn to code in Python and Scratch and augment their foreign language studies with virtual tours around the globe. Faculty use Flipped Instruction to make videos available on demand for additional instruction and AP Biology students collaborate in teams to develop a digital study guide for the AP exam. In every division and every subject, our teachers are constantly seeking to expand the use of technology to provide each student with increased opportunities for creativity, collaboration and exploration.
To ensure our students use technology safely and responsibly, we provide comprehensive instruction on digital citizenship and literacy. Using resources such as Common Sense Media and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), we seamlessly integrate the tenets of online safety and Flint Hill’s four core values ― respect, honesty, responsibility and compassion ― into daily classroom activities.
