Lower School Newsletter – August 26, 2026
August 26, 2026
Letter From the Division Director
Lower School Families, I have missed you these past months! Our faculty and staff have returned from summer break, and the Lower School is almost ready to start the year!
As we approach that special day, the first day of school, I want to take a moment to thank you. The back-to-school season brings countless unseen to-do lists, from completing forms to labeling uniforms, coordinating schedules, establishing routines, and helping children prepare for a new year. I see and appreciate all of the care you put forth into making this transition a positive one for your children.
This year, we will rely more intentionally on Husky Hub as an important communication tool for families. Please pay close attention to the announcement in this newsletter about setting up your Husky Hub notifications and managing your settings.
You will notice a shift in how we use Seesaw this year. Rather than serving as a communication tool, Seesaw will function as a portfolio of student work and a window into the learning process.
We are so excited to welcome your children to the Lower School! The beginning of a school year is filled with possibilities, and we are grateful to begin another year in partnership with all of you. Wishing your families a year filled with joyful learning, meaningful connections, and plenty of moments that remind us what makes the Lower School the best place to learn and grow!
All the best,
Jess Henry
Director of the Lower School
Announcements
Action Required: Turn On Husky Hub Notifications
We know electronic school communications can add up quickly. To make it easier for you to find key information, teachers will now send class communications exclusively through Husky Hub.
Schoolwide and grade-level updates will continue to arrive via email and in this biweekly newsletter. However, to ensure you never miss critical teacher updates, please take a few minutes to enable notifications in Husky Hub.
Steps to Set Up Notifications in Husky Hub
- Log in to Husky Hub, click on your Profile Name in the top right-hand corner → Select Settings
- Navigate to Notifications
- Find Announcements Posted → Click Edit Options
- Under In My Child’s Groups, select all boxes → Click Save
- Lastly, ensure the checkbox next to Announcements Posted under the Email column is selected. You may also choose to receive notifications by text message.
- Click here for more detailed instructions and email helpdesk@flinthill.org with any questions.
Review Important Guidelines for Drop-Off and Pickup
Keeping our students safe during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup requires everyone's cooperation and patience. When entering and exiting campus, it’s imperative that drivers:
- Maintain low speeds.
- Ensure all passengers remain completely inside moving vehicles.
- Follow the directions of the off-duty Fairfax County police officers managing traffic.
For detailed, division-specific carpool instructions and updates, please visit the Carpool tile on the Resource Board.
Important Change to Lower School Morning Drop-Off Window
For the 2026-27 school year, the Lower School morning arrival schedule will change. Morning carline will run from 7:30-8:00 a.m. each day. This is a change from past years, as carline previously ended at 8:10 a.m. If your family arrives after 8:00 a.m., please follow these steps:
- Park your vehicle.
- Walk your child to the front entrance of the Lower School using Door 1.
- Use your SchoolPass Quick PIN to check your child in at the iPad.
A member of our Lower School office team will greet your child at the entrance and escort them to their classroom.
New Visitor Sign-In System
As we shared by email on Monday, Flint Hill moved to Raptor Safe for all campus check-ins to enhance safety and streamline visits. Whether you are a returning family or new to Flint Hill, please download the Raptor Safe app and create your digital Raptor Passport prior to your next campus visit to ensure seamless entry.
This new process allows for faster entry during school events and provides thorough automated ID verification to keep our community secure. Please feel free to reach out to Director of Security Kevin Plourde with any questions.
First Week of School Details
Please review these key details regarding specialist classes and dress expectations for our first week back.
- Lower Schoolers will not have Specialist classes during the first two days of school. This allows students and teachers time to establish routines, build community, and settle into their homerooms. Specialist classes will begin on Friday, September 4, which is a B Day.
- 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will have P.E. on Friday, September 4 and should arrive dressed in their P.E. clothes. Please refer to the Lower School Student Dress Expectations for additional details.
- Husky Pride Dress is every Friday. The first Husky Pride Dress of this school year is on Friday, September 4. Please refer to the Lower School Student Dress Expectations for additional details.
Sign Up to Volunteer in the Igloo and Den!
One of the most frequent and fun volunteer opportunities is selling concessions in the Igloo or Den. It’s a great way to meet other parents, get a glimpse of life in the Upper School, or get the best view of a game on Peterson Family Field.
The Igloo (Upper School): Opens Wednesday, September 2, for break and after-school shifts. Sign up for a shift in the Igloo.
The Den (John M. Thomas Terrace): Opens Tuesday, September 8, for select home games on Peterson Family Field. Sign up for a shift in the Den.
All proceeds support the Parents’ Association Endowment for Financial Aid, assisting current families facing unexpected financial hardship. We are excited to open both concession stands for the school year and need many volunteers to operate!
Order a Homecoming T-Shirt by Friday, September 4
Homecoming Under the Lights Week celebration will be from Monday, September 28 to Friday, October 2!
One of the ways we show our Husky spirit is by sporting a Homecoming T-shirt. This year’s Homecoming design was imagined by the Upper School student members of the Athletic Advisory Council and is available in youth and adult sizes.
Order this year’s Homecoming T-shirt, and be sure to enter your student’s homeroom teacher or advisor. Shirts will be delivered to those classrooms the week before Homecoming. Huskies are encouraged to wear their T-shirts during the bonfire and football game on Friday evening. The deadline to order is Friday, September 4, at 3:00 p.m. No late orders will be accepted after this date.
Stay tuned for more information about Homecoming. Details to come about the game schedule, bonfire, Spirit Alley activities, school store hours, Upper School dance, and more.
