    Letter From the Division Director

Welcome to a new school year! My excitement is at a 10 out of 10 as we get ready to reunite and begin a year filled with connection, curiosity, and growth. There’s a unique excitement in the air; it feels like a blend of fresh beginnings and the quiet confidence that comes from growth. Throughout the school year, we witness incredible academic and social growth in our students. Yet, as we reconnect, we also celebrate the beautiful and often underappreciated growth that happens over the summer months.

Perhaps your child learned to ride a bike, gaining a new sense of independence and balance. Maybe they practiced throwing a curveball and mastered it just in time for a late-inning strikeout. Or they might have opened a lemonade stand and proudly served neighbors, discovering the joy of entrepreneurship. Some may have set a personal goal, like swimming 25 meters for the first time, and experienced the confidence that comes from persistence and accomplishment. Others may have attended sleepaway camp for the first time, exploring what it means to be responsible for oneself, build new friendships, and adapt to life in a new environment. These moments, while outside the classroom, are rich with the qualities we nurture in the Lower School: resilience, creativity, independence, and a willingness to take meaningful risks!

Just as our students have grown in joyful and meaningful ways, so too has the Lower School. Over the summer, our Leadership Team has thoughtfully and intentionally refined our daily schedule to implement a six-day rotation. This model enriches each student's academic experience by providing more time for deep learning with both classroom and specialist teachers. It also aligns our division with the Middle and Upper School, strengthening the sense of community across all grades.

The Lower School is also exploring ways to expand our use of Husky Hub, which will provide families with clearer insight into their child’s school day while preparing our students for a seamless transition into the next stages of their Flint Hill journey. We are excited to begin another year of learning, laughter, and connection with your family. But first, enjoy the last few weeks of summer with your loved ones!

    In Gratitude,

    Jess Henry
    Director of the Lower School

    Back-to-School

Class Placements Available Tomorrow on Husky Hub

Tomorrow, Thursday, August 7, you will learn who your child’s homeroom teacher will be for the upcoming school year. Along with their homeroom teacher, you’ll also be introduced to the other teachers who will be working with your child throughout the year, supporting their growth across all areas of learning.

Our approach to class placement is both thoughtful and comprehensive. We take into account each student’s academic progress, social-emotional development, and individual learning style, alongside the unique strengths and teaching approaches of our faculty. Our goal is always to create learning environments where every student can thrive and feel a strong sense of belonging.

We understand that a class assignment might not be what your child expected, and that can be upsetting. Should your child express unhappiness, here is some guidance from to help you navigate this common challenge:

    • Listen actively to your child to help them express themselves and what they are feeling.
    • Validate their feelings as normal/understandable — it makes sense that they would want to be surrounded by their closest friends in advisory and classes.
    • Avoid the tendency to fix or solve it for them — both because we (at school) don’t change advisory or class groupings at this point and because, in order to build resilience, kids need to be able to sit with discomfort and know that the adults around them believe they are capable of handling it.

To access your child’s class placement, log in to Husky Hub, click “Children,” and select your child’s name. Click on the "Schedule" tab to access your child's schedule. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant to the Director and the Assistant Director of the Lower School Donna Holaday at 703.584.2360.

Preparing for the 2025-26 School Year

Several resources are available to help your family prepare for the upcoming school year. Preparing for the 2025-26 School Year is a tile on the Husky Hub Resource Board with a comprehensive listing of back-to-school information. Here are some quick links we think you’ll be most interested in:

    • Lower School Dress Expectations: Note there is an update regarding P.E. clothes. On days that 5th and 6th grades have P.E. class, students should arrive at school wearing their P.E. uniform. Please note that students will remain in their P.E. clothes for the rest of the school day. Speaking of student uniforms, there’s also access to Lands' End offers, including 50% off backpacks and lunchboxes, August 2-9. Use code BACKPACKS50 and PIN 4852 at checkout.
    • Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pickup Instructions: The drop-off and pickup procedures remain the same as last year. Please review them carefully to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

Please Review the 2025-26 Flint Hill Family Handbook

All families are required to review the Flint Hill Family Handbook for the 2025-26 school year. The Family Handbook outlines community standards and policies for all Flint Hill students and family members and is organized into three sections: “Respect for Self,” “Respect for Others,” and “Respect for Shared Environment.” The Flint Hill Family Handbook will live on the Resource Board for ease of reference. No other action is required, as enrollment at Flint Hill expects awareness and respect of these policies throughout the school year.

    New Letter Day Schedule

Exciting news for Lower School! We've transitioned to a 6-day rotating schedule, designed to enrich each student's academic experience by providing more time for deep learning, greater flexibility for enrichment, and enhanced opportunities for student well-being throughout the year. Below, in our “Subscribe to Flint Hill Calendars” section, you’ll find multiple options to add the Letter Day schedule to your own calendar.

Action Requested: Complete Visitor ID Registration

All Lower School parents and guardians are asked to complete the Visitor ID form. Submitting the form helps us streamline building entry and ensures you're ready for Back-to-School Night and other upcoming events. If you've already filled it out, you're all set! We ask that you please submit the form by Friday, August 15. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our campus safe!

Bus Service Sign-Up Deadline — Friday, August 15

To sign your student up for bus service, please complete the Bus Service Registration Form by Friday, August 15.

Detailed information and a complete list of all morning, afternoon, and evening bus routes are on the Bus Service Information page. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Systems Operations and Systems Training Melissa Turner at bus@flinthill.org or by phone/text at 571.926.7502.

Optional: Join the Flint Hill Carpool Network

To assist families who have an interest in forming a new carpool or adding to an existing one, we have launched a carpool availability feature in the Student Directory on Husky Hub. This resource may be especially helpful to new families who are not served by one of our existing bus routes. From the main toolbar in Husky Hub, select “Directories.” Then select “Student,” under filters navigate to Carpool Availability, and select “Yes.” Use the other available filters to narrow your results as well as the map feature for an additional view.

    AfterCare Sign-Up Deadline — Friday, August 15

The AfterCare program is designed to support students through the power of play and enrichment opportunities and is available daily, 3:00-5:30 p.m. See the AfterCare page for details. To sign your student up for AfterCare, please complete the AfterCare Program Registration Form by Friday, August 15. If you have any questions, please email Director of After School and Summer Programs Matt McCoart or contact by phone/text at 571.752.1630.

Optional: Sign Up for Yay Lunch

Those interested in the Lower School lunch program must sign up with Yay Lunch to receive a weekly email, sent every Thursday, featuring lunch menus for the following week. Orders can be placed anytime before Sunday, with the flexibility to choose meals for the entire week or just specific days. Be sure to create a Cafe ID when you register your 5th or 6th grade student to allow them to access the Yay Cafe.

If you have questions about the ordering process or Yay in general, read the Yay FAQs or email info@theyaycompany.com.

    Textbooks and Supplies

Textbooks and workbooks for the 2025-26 school year are available for purchase via our eCampus textbook store. Lower School students can purchase access to math and language arts resources through the online eCampus textbook store. If you have textbook questions, please contact Executive Assistant to the Head of School Wendy Seetaram.

Lower School supplies are furnished by the School and are included in tuition. It is recommended that all Lower School students bring reusable water bottles that are no more than nine inches tall to school every day.
Students in Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten are asked to purchase a backpack without wheels that is 16 inches high x 13 wide x 7 1/4 deep. Students in Junior Kindergarten should also have a small blanket for rest time (maximum size 40 x 40).

Health Forms — New and Returning Students

Completed health forms must be uploaded to the Magnus Health system and approved by the first day of classes, or your child may not attend school. If you have any questions regarding the health forms, please email Director of Health Services Mary Hart or call at 571.926.2818.

SchoolPass Steps To Complete Before School Starts

Flint Hill School uses SchoolPass, a user-friendly and real-time system that allows parents to easily notify the school of student absences, late arrivals, or appointments; helps students and teachers with daily attendance; and assists the school with efficient and secure dismissal to direct students to Lower School carpool, buses, and AfterCare.

You will receive your car tags during your Hopes and Dreams Conference. During carpool, your tag will be scanned and confirmed by a staff member. This automatically notifies classroom teachers that you are in the carpool line, so they can send your child to the pickup area.

Subscribe to Flint Hill School Calendars

To better serve parents, our calendar events are split up by division. There are six different calendars that parents can subscribe to. There is a description of each calendar below, along with instructions for how to subscribe. We recommend that parents subscribe to their division’s calendar as well as:

    • 2025-26 Parent Highlights Calendar: includes major school dates like start and end dates, breaks, and school holidays.
    • 2025-26 All-School Events: includes events designed for the entire community, including some major Athletics, DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), Fine Arts, and PA (Parents’ Association) events.

Parents may also want to subscribe to the Letter Days calendar, which helps families keep track of which letter day it is.

How to Subscribe: If you’re a Google calendar user, you can subscribe to each calendar so that they populate on your personal Google calendar by clicking the links below.

If you’re NOT a Google calendar user, you can subscribe to each calendar so that they populate on your personal calendar. Events for the past 2 months and the upcoming 12 months will be included in the feed. It may take up to an hour for any setting changes to be reflected in your external calendars.

As part of our commitment to supporting the whole child, we are pleased to once again offer speech/language and occupational therapy services to our families this school year.

OWLS Therapy will once again offer our students in-school speech/language support services. We are excited to welcome a new speech/language pathologist (SLP) from OWLS, Hannah Vaughn, for the 2025-26 school year. She has evaluated, treated, and provided parent education in language disorders, articulation/phonology disorders, fluency and voice disorders, pragmatic language disorders, as well as childhood apraxia of speech, feeding disorders, and autism.

A new occupational therapist will also be joining our Husky team this school year as our on-campus provider. Amanda Simmons, co-founder of Simmons Pediatric Therapy, brings over eight years of experience in the field. Amanda has worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and schools across the DMV region, thoughtfully designing and delivering programs that support the needs of young learners.

Parent-Teacher Hopes and Dreams Conferences — August 25-26

Using the Responsive Classroom approach, homeroom teachers and advisors build their classroom communities with intention and care, so that each child feels safe, respected, and that they belong. To gain a better understanding of each child and facilitate a strong partnership with parents for the school year ahead, homeroom teachers and advisors will host a 20-minute in-person Hopes and Dreams Conference for parents on Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26. These conferences give parents the opportunity to share their hopes, dreams, and goals for their child for the new year. Parents are also encouraged to share any other information that would be helpful for the teacher to know about their child.

Parents will be emailed instructions to sign up for the in-person conferences, using our online scheduling system, beginning Monday, August 11. You will also find the sign-up link on the Husky Hub Resource Board. Drop-in childcare for currently enrolled Lower School Students will be available in Room 201 while their parents are in their conferences. If you have any questions or need help with the online scheduling system, please email Donna Holaday or call her at 703.584.2360.

Lower School New Parent Orientation — Friday, August 29

New Lower School families are invited to a special session with Lower School administrators on Friday, August 29, 8:15-10:15 a.m., in the Olson Theater. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive helpful information, learn ways to get involved, and ensure a successful start to the school year.

    Lower School Birthday Celebration Policy

Due to our commitment to fostering an equitable, inclusive, and safe environment for all students, we provide all birthday celebration items. Please remember that no outside food, treats, or favors are permitted on campus. We invite you to celebrate your child's special day by sending in photos or a slideshow to be shared with the class. Additionally, students will get a "Free Dress Day" (students may wear non-uniform clothing that reflects their personality and style) and be recognized during our morning meeting.

    New Roles and New Hires

We're thrilled to introduce the new faces joining our community this year, as well as several admin, faculty, and staff members who have taken on new roles.

Welcome from Barbara O’Reilly, Parents' Association President

I look forward to a fantastic year ahead and connecting with Flint Hill families.  There are many PA events planned for this year in addition to volunteer opportunities, and the newsletter is the best resource to see what’s on the horizon.
