Upper School Newsletter – August 6, 2025

August 6, 2025
Letter From the Division Director
Welcome to the 2025-26 school year!
I am so excited to have officially begun my tenure here at Flint Hill, as my family and I made the move from Illinois earlier this summer. I greatly appreciate the warm welcome and support I have received, and the past four weeks have been spent exploring Northern Virginia, meeting with as many people as possible, and learning everything about what it means to be a Husky. These conversations have reinforced what makes Flint Hill extraordinary, and I cannot wait to experience it all firsthand!
Please know that I, along with the entire Upper School faculty and staff, am committed to ensuring our students are supported, challenged, and encouraged to participate. Our goal is to create an environment where every student feels respected, valued, and excited about learning.
This is what makes Flint Hill special and sets us apart. And, it is the partnership with our families that allows us to do this great work. Thank you in advance for that support, and I look forward to meeting all of you in the coming weeks, whether that is during preseason, those first days of classes, or at Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 28 (mark your calendars!).
Finally, the opening newsletter is always one full of information. This edition is no exception, so please take some time to read through it as it contains a lot of nuts and bolts to help make the start of school as smooth as possible. I would like to particularly call your attention to the Upper School’s Academic Handbook as well as our Dress Expectations. As always, if you would like to follow up about any questions, please do not hesitate to email me or reach out to any of the following individuals:
- Assistant Director of the Upper School and US Academic Dean Howard Chang
- Assistant to the Director and Assistant Director of the US Ban Hameed
- School Registrar Maha Morse
- US Dean of Students Jeremiah Shepherd
- US Dean of Student Life and Community Joelle Tam
With joy and humility, I’m truly grateful to be here. Enjoy what is left of summer and see you soon!
Chris Tennyson
Director of the Upper School

Student Schedules Available Online — Thursday, August 7
Specific teacher and class assignments will be available on Thursday, August 7. To access your child’s class placement, log in to Husky Hub, click “Children,” and select your child’s name. Click on the “Schedule” tab to access your child's schedule. Please note that the Drop/Add deadline for Upper School students is the end of the day on Friday, September 12. Students wishing to make a schedule change need to contact School Registrar Maha Morse.
Preparing for the 2025-26 School Year
Several resources are available to help your family prepare for the upcoming school year. Preparing for the 2025-26 School Year is a tile on the Husky Hub Resource Board with a comprehensive listing of back-to-school information. Here are some quick links we think you’ll be most interested in:
Please Review the 2025-26 Flint Hill Family Handbook
All families are required to review the Flint Hill Family Handbook for the 2025-26 school year. The Family Handbook outlines community standards and policies for all Flint Hill students and family members and is organized into three sections: “Respect for Self,” “Respect for Others,” and “Respect for Shared Environment.” The Flint Hill Family Handbook will live on the Resource Board for ease of reference. No other action is required, as enrollment at Flint Hill expects awareness and respect of these policies throughout the school year.
Bus Service Sign-Up Deadline — Friday, August 15
To sign your student up for bus service, please complete the Bus Service Registration Form by Friday, August 15.
Detailed information and a complete list of all morning, afternoon, and evening bus routes is on the Bus Service Information page. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Systems Operations and Systems Training Melissa Turner at bus@flinthill.org or by phone/text at 571.926.7502.
Optional: Join the Flint Hill Carpool Network
To assist families who have an interest in forming a new carpool or adding to an existing one, we have launched a carpool availability feature in the Student Directory on Husky Hub. This resource may be especially helpful to new families who are not served by one of our existing bus routes. From the main toolbar in Husky Hub, select “Directories.” Then select “Student,” under filters navigate to Carpool Availability, and select “Yes.” Use the other available filters to narrow your results as well as the map feature for an additional view.
Student Parking Registration
Parking is available to student drivers in the Upper School student parking lot. Students who do not have a parking sticker from last year and plan on parking at school must complete the Student Parking Registration Form by Monday, August 18. The form must be reviewed and acknowledged by a parent/guardian.
Registration forms will be processed over the summer. During the first week of school, the Security team will educate student drivers about campus driving and parking expectations, and then students will be issued parking stickers. Students who obtain a driver’s license during the school year will go through the same registration and education process. Please contact Lead Security Officer Rasheka Barnes with any questions.
Textbooks and Supplies
Textbooks and workbooks for the 2025-26 school year are available for purchase via our eCampus textbook store. Please reference your child’s schedule on Husky Hub when you order textbooks. If you have textbook questions, please contact Executive Assistant to the Head of School Wendy Seetaram.
Upper School students are responsible for their own school supplies. Individual teachers will inform students of specific supplies needed for their classes.
Health Forms — New and Returning Students
Completed health forms must be uploaded to the Magnus Health system and approved by the first day of classes, or your child may not attend school. If you have any questions regarding the health forms, please email Director of Health Services Mary Hart or call at 571.926.2818.
Subscribe to Flint Hill School Calendars
To better serve parents, our calendar events are split up by division. There are six different calendars that parents can subscribe to. There is a description of each calendar below, along with instructions for how to subscribe. We recommend that parents subscribe to their division’s calendar as well as:
- 2025-26 Parent Highlights Calendar: includes major school dates like start and end dates, breaks, and school holidays.
- 2025-26 All-School Events: includes events designed for the entire community, including some major Athletics, DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), Fine Arts, and PA (Parents’ Association) events.
Parents may also want to subscribe to the Letter Days calendar, which helps families keep track of which letter day it is.
How to Subscribe: If you’re a Google calendar user, you can subscribe to each calendar so that they populate on your personal Google calendar by clicking the links below.
If you’re NOT a Google calendar user, you can subscribe to each calendar so that they populate on your personal calendar. Events for the past 2 months and the upcoming 12 months will be included in the feed. It may take up to an hour for any setting changes to be reflected in your external calendars.

Interested in Hosting a Student from Cataluña, Spain?
We are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the Instituto Josep Vallverdu in Cataluña, Spain, during their visit to Flint Hill from September 15-25. We are in need of a host family for a 17-year-old female student. Host families provide lodging, meals, and transportation to school during their stay. The students will visit all of the popular DC sites with their teachers, and they are interested in seeing what life is like for you in your home! We are celebrating 10 years of sharing experiences with this school, and it is always an amazing experience for all who are involved. Please contact US Spanish Teacher Kristin Piazza if you are interested in opening your home to a student!
Fall Meet the Coaches Night — Friday, August 22
Fall Meet the Coaches Night will be held on Friday, August 22, at 5:45 p.m. in the Upper School Gym. This meeting is mandatory for all Upper School fall sports teams. We will review available resources, explain the uniform policy, and provide time for coaches to meet with families and discuss expectations for the upcoming season.
New Roles, Departures, and New Hires
We're thrilled to introduce the new faces joining our community this year, as well as several admin, faculty, and staff members who have taken on new roles.
Welcome from Barbara O’Reilly, Parents' Association President
It’s almost time to kick off the 2025-26 school year! Whether this is your first year or you’re a “pro-level” Husky, I am glad you are part of this community. I look forward to a fantastic year ahead and connecting with Flint Hill families. There are many PA events planned for this year in addition to volunteer opportunities, and the newsletter is the best resource to see what’s on the horizon.
I hope you and your family enjoy the last few weeks of summer, and I look forward to seeing you soon!
