Letter From the Division Director
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Recently, I took advantage of the slightly warmer temperatures and went for a walk around campus. While things aren't entirely ready for spring yet, the athletic season’s start is just a few days away. This truly signals that we are approaching the final stretch of the school year. Independent school campuses are awesome, and often busy, places to be in the spring! With that in mind, I want to draw your attention to a few important items:
Tomorrow is Flint Hill Day, a day that provides an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate our collective accomplishments. We will also recognize employees for their dedication and commitment. The dress code is "professional dress" for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, and "senior dress" for our 12th grade students. Please review the Upper School Student Dress Expectations document for details.
Our Course Recommendation process has started, and students have begun meeting with US Academic Dean Howard Chang to learn more about how course recommendations and selections work. In the coming weeks, teachers will begin entering their recommendations. When we return from Spring Break, students will review those recommendations and enter their course selections. Our College Advising Team will play an important role in this process. Also on this topic: Read more, below, about the Parent Education Series: Academic Planning for Parents of Rising 10th-12th Graders on Wednesday, February 25.
Friday, March 13, is a special schedule. We will be administering a practice ACT to our 10th graders, and other students will not have classes. Please note that bus service will not be available on this day.
And although these things are still a few months away, it is never too early to think about Senior Day on Friday, May 1 (which also happens to be the opening of our Spring Musical), and final exams, which run from May 29 to June 4. More information about these dates will be provided later.
Wishing you all a fantastic second half of your week and, as always, please reach out with questions or concerns.
Chris Tennyson
Director of the Upper School

This is a great opportunity to learn more about course selection and the systems in place to support your student’s continued success in the Upper School.
Senior Workshop: The More You Know — Friday, February 27
The Upper School Counseling Team is excited to announce "The More You Know," a series of optional workshops for each grade level on health and well-being topics. This semester, the counselors will host workshops for seniors during flex block or office hours on topics such as sexual health, consent, substance use, decision-making, and redefining masculinity. Interested seniors can sign up to attend a workshop of their choice. Sign-up information will be sent to seniors a few days before the workshop. For the first workshop on Friday, February 27, seniors may choose from two options: sexual health and redefining masculinity.
Winter Athletics Awards Ceremony — Wednesday, March 4
Join us on Wednesday, March 4, in the Upper School Gym from 1:15-2:30 p.m. as we recognize our 2025-26 Winter sports athletes and their accomplishments.

The Upper School follows a special schedule on Friday, March 13, the last day before Spring Break. We use that day to administer the pre-ACT to the 10th grade students. Does Your Work Involve City Planning, Animals, or Space?
From time to time, teachers would like to bring in a presenter to enhance the classroom curriculum. Given the extensive levels of expertise within the parent and alumni community, we’d like to make these opportunities more broadly accessible.
We have a current need for speakers who would briefly present on the following topics in an age-appropriate way for 1st graders:
- City Planning: We are looking for someone who can share how cities are planned, possibly connecting it to the problem-solving process or writing process.
- Animals/Plants: Help facilitate a nature walk and spark curiosity about animals and the planet before we begin or during those learning units.
- Space: Having learned about day and night patterns, and following a planetarium visit, we are looking for someone who can share more info about space.
Contact Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement Meredith VanDuyne to learn more (no obligations).
Thank you for helping students and teachers make these real-world connections!
