The Head of School – January 21, 2026
January 21, 2026
Flint Hill Community,
From time to time, a friend or community member will say to me, “Your job must be hard…” It’s always offered with kindness and empathy, and I appreciate the sentiment. My response is usually some version of, “Yes — but I love it.” That tension is the heart of leadership: meaningful work is rarely easy, but it is deeply fulfilling. It’s a challenge I experience as a school leader — and one I hope our Huskies encounter through their academic and co-curricular experiences at Flint Hill as well.
The role of a Head of School often requires wearing many hats — at times a mayor, a general, or a cleric — each dictated by the needs of the moment. My days can pivot quickly from collaborating with faculty and administrators to imagining new opportunities for our students, to visiting classrooms and common spaces to listen and learn from our Huskies, to seeking philanthropic support that advances our mission, to cheering from the sidelines or welcoming prospective families. It is energizing, demanding, and profoundly rewarding — much like the important work carried out every day by members of our Husky team across campus.
In that same spirit of growth and learning that we value for our students and educators, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my own professional development. This week, I’ll be in New York participating in a two-week Head of School Fellowship at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. This selective, fully funded experience will bring together heads of school from around the world for thoughtful dialogue and learning. Together, we’ll explore topics including emerging trends in student learning, the evolving role of artificial intelligence in education, and the responsibilities of leading vibrant, values-driven communities.
I’m deeply thankful for the support of our Board of Trustees and the exceptional leadership of our Senior Leadership Team, who will continue to “drive the sled” at Flint Hill while I am away. I look forward to representing Flint Hill in this important setting and returning with insights that will further strengthen our work on behalf of our Huskies and community. I’ll share more reflections in the weeks ahead — and will continue to hold Flint Hill close to heart while I’m away.
Go Huskies!
